Potato route

Quality is the common thread throughout our potato route. From planting and cultivating to storing, packaging and delivering, we make sure we meet the highest standards. Take a look below:

Harvesting

De aardappelhoeve has its own 4-row AVR Puma 3 harvester we use efficiently. As it is our own harvester, we can quickly react when weather conditions change unexpectedly. Moreover, our harvester is perfectly tuned for harvesting table potatoes. We process less soil, which leads to less possibility of damaging the harvest.

Reception zone

After a stringent check upon arrival, every freight of potatoes receives a batch number. From the moment the freight is unloaded we can trace it at any time using our tracking system. During unloading we already separate the baby potatoes from the biggest potatoes.

3

Box storage

De aardappelhoeve has 10,000 tons of box storage of which 1,000 destined to organic potatoes. We exclusively cool mechanically. This way we can guarantee an even temperature in the cold rooms regardless of the weather conditions. All boxes have a chip which is activated when filling the boxes. This way we know the exact location of every batch.

Washing zone

We have two washing lines. One of these lines is equipped for organic potatoes. The washing line also uses a separate water circuit. We did this on purpose to avoid contamination with conventional washing water. After the potatoes leave the wash-drum, they are dried on a roller dryer. While drying we treat the potatoes with UV light so we can avoid the development of certain funguses, e.g. silver scurf.

5

Sorting zone

After the potatoes have been washed, we sort them. We have two optical grading machines that divide the potatoes in four classes. First, the lesser quality potatoes are removed. Defects such as green discoloration, mechanical damages, rot, scurf, rhizoctonia, ... do not belong in the bag. Then we grade the good potatoes again according to size, weight, quality, ... In short, whatever the client needs, we’ll get it sorted out.

Automated warehouse

After the potatoes have been sorted, they are again stored in boxes. Those boxes are then stored for one to two days in an automated warehouse. We can store 200,000 kg of washed potatoes in the cooled warehouses. Thanks to this system it’s possible to perfectly store and track every batch and every size until they’re sent to packaging. Obviously we use other boxes to store the organic potatoes than the ones used for conventional potatoes.

7

Packaging

Before the potatoes are put in a bag, we’ll sort them again manually. This means trained employees check the potatoes. When a potato of lesser quality has found its way into the batch, it’s then manually removed. By doing so, we are 100% sure only the perfect potatoes have been packed. Then the potatoes are weighed and finally packed in the way the client desires. At this moment we have five packing lines with each one or two packing machines. Each machine can make a different kind of packaging. This way we can offer every packing method the customer wants.
